If we are not freezing, we are rained out. High school ball players in Illinois suffer
through the cruelest baseball weather in five years. Coaches scramble to take advantage of the
small windows of opportunity to get in games.
Saturday, April 13 brought snow flurries at the start of the day. It warmed slightly but the gushing winds did
not make anyone believe that winter had ended.
Despite the brutal weather, there were some teams
that got in their games and the athletes should be commended for enduring the
cold. With that being said, there were
also some very explosive offensive demonstrations in the underclassmen
games. Evergreen Park sophomores racked
up 23 runs in two games as they swept the Mustangs of Morgan Park. #10 Harvey of Evergreen Park lead the
offensive assault with five hits on the day and he pitched a gem in the 12 – 2
slaughter of the Mustangs.

The Crusaders of Brother Rice played a defensive
battle against De La Salle where Danny Paluch of Brother Rice went 2 for 3 with
3 total bases to give Brian O’Conell enough run support for Brother Rice to
come through with the win.

Glenbard East got in their game but fell to a 5 and
5 record with a loss to Naperville Central.
This was a great pitching duel and although Tim Pignato seemed to be a
one man team, it takes a nine man team to win. Tim Pignato pitched 7 innings
and despite walking six batters, he buckled down in the clutch and allowed only
two runs.

Wheaton Academy makes a solid argument for being
considered the best sophomore team in the state. They continued their winning ways remaining
undefeated behind the bat of Chris Johnson who upped his batting average over
700 this weekend. Chris Johnson had
three hits against Glenbard North pitchers.
Despite some untimely errors, Wheaton Academy’s skill outlasted Glenbard
North.

Along with Benet Academy, the York Dukes should be
mentioned in the conversation of the best sophomore teams in the state. Behind the dominating pitching of Brian
Peterson, the Dukes forced the mercy rule against their bitter rivals at
Glenbard West. The Dukes went on to
sweep the Hill toppers in the double header after their strike out king Matthew
Sabatini was tagged for five consecutive hits including a two run double to give
the Hill toppers a 5 run second inning rally.
The Dukes responded with a four run third inning and took the lead in
the sixth inning. In that game Mike
Homan carried the Dukes on his back with three hits and four runs batted
in. It was clear to Glenbard west – a
freshman dominated sophomore team – that York has too many weapons offensively
to relax with a three run lead.

Larry Cicchiello says “If you are the relay man, try to have
your right shoulder pointing in the general direction of your outfielder and
your left shoulder pointing toward the base you will be throwing to if
possible. This can save a valuable
fraction f a second and could make a difference on the out/safe call.
